Patination of Silicon Bronze is a very fragile experience, involving the use of heat and chemicals. In this photo, a base coat of Sulferated Potash was applied, and then alternating coats of various nitrates and thiosulfates were used to give the bronze it's  "Patina" . The use of patinas give some real nice variations to a bronze edition, thus leaving each sculpture an originality.

Here heat is applied using a wide orifice patina torch. It kicks out about 50,000 Btu. The torch has an idle pilot on it for quick addition of heat. Notice in this photo, that I am using a multitude of safety gear, including a full face shield, a chemical respirator, heavy clothing and chemical use rubber gloves. Though most of these chemicals are reasonably safe, they are still dangerous and not to be taken lightly.

This is the patina kitchen, or laboratory to some.  It is made of all stainless alloy, with hot and cold water, propane torch, and air hose. A proper ventilator hood is installed above. Chemicals are sorted and stored separated in the plastic drawers below, so as not to have premature reactions with each other.

Above are several brushes and spray bottles used in the patina application. Steel wool, brass brushes, and scotchbrites are also present. A cement block serves a good support for the heavy bronzes, and is expendable to the chemicals. It works very well sitting on a plastic lazy suzan so that you can have fast accurate heating to all needed areas. Weather, applied heat, chemical potency and Pataneur all have varying effects on the outcome, so expect to be very original in your work.
